SoHo is a play on the name of the famous shopping district in London, England, justifying its name by being the area South of Houston Street. Soho was the first amusing acronym to be given as a name for a neighborhood, with Tribeca to follow. Both areas combined used to be know as the Cast Iron District that is bounded roughly by Houston Street on the north, Lafayette Street on the east, Canal Street on the south, and Varick Street on the west.

Owning a condominium in SoHo means being close to some of Manhattans most popular areas: Greenwich Village, Little Italy, Chinatown and the Financial District. It is also close to many prominent subway lines, making a Soho apartment, loft or condo close to most every New York City attraction.

Historically, Soho was predominantly a commercial area which was to be the meeting point of 2 highways. After this plan was abandoned, many historic buildings remained vacant and, throughout the 20 th Century, became the perfect "playground" for many famous artists. The empty spaces, later termed lofts, offered allot of open space and natural light, perfect for sculpting and painting, as well as low rents.

In the late 1980's Soho lofts were "discovered" as a great real estate investment deal and home of some of the most trendy condominiums available. SoHo's location, the appeal of lofts and new luxury condos as living spaces, its architecture and, ironically, its "hip" reputation as a haven for artists all contributed to this change. Now SoHo is know for its rents being amongst the highest in the Big Apple.

SoHo is now a popular tourist destination for people looking for fashionable (and expensive) clothing, exquisite architecture and celebrity sightings. It has produced many new condo developments and is known as one of Manhattan's safest neighborhoods.
